At Smiley Tot we want you to win at parenting.
Flying with a toddler does not need to be taxing, it can be an adventure and perfectly enjoyable. We want you to win at flying with your toddler and these 10 tips will get you there. Maybe you and your partner can even relish in a glass of wine or hot coffee on the plane—who knew this was possible flying with a toddler?
The first key is PREPARATION! Have you ever been in a situation where you are suddenly thrown into an environment you were not prepared for? That can really throw your nervous system out of sink. With toddlers it’s heightened, their brains are already in the developmental stage of lots of turbulence, so let’s calm the noise for them. Here comes the first strategy for flying with a toddler:
PREPARATION
Using a book such as Going On An Airplane, A Toddler Prep Book by the brand ReadySetPrep is a great way to get them in the know about airports and flying. Get them excited about the adventure. Learning about what they will see, and experience is a perfect start. You can also use shows like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Going On An Airplane if your kiddo learns better from visual animation.
BOOK AN EARLY FLIGHT
Timing is a big part of the puzzle here. Like adults, kids are fresher in the morning. See if there is an in-flight time during their nap so they can sleep on the plane. Be mindful that the hour or two before your flight will be less stressful during their awake time since you will be navigating through the airport and security.

BOOK A WINDOW SEAT
Toddler alert – the aisle is not toddler friendly as it poses risk for pinched fingers with the food cart. A window seat can offer distractions with a view.
DRESS IN COMFORTABLE LAYERS
You never know if the airplane will be hot, cold, or change when you are in mid-air. Aim to dress your kiddo in comfortable layers. For example, the first layer comprises of a t-shirt and socks, and the second layer consists of joggers and a sweatshirt. Shoes should ideally be slip-on or zipper with no laces. You want the security check to be effortless. We love Native Shoes for airport days!
BRING YOUR STROLLER
You can opt to bring a smaller stroller; however, you are allowed to check your stroller right at the gate (no extra charge!). It’s even ready for you right when you come off the plane. It’s literally like stroller valet if that was a real thing. The stroller can double as a place to store your backpacks and diaper bag, so you aren’t lugging a toddler plus luggage around.
AIR PRESSURE SOLUTIONS
There are lots of things you can do to minimize air pressure for your kiddo. Have them drink milk or water during takeoff and landing. Note that the descent is the most bothersome time for ear pressure. Swallowing can assist in alleviating air pressure and the liquid helps with travel dehydration. No brainer here, bring the liquids! Our ENT even recommended the product earPlanes. This ear plug is meant for small ears and is designed to relieve air pressure discomfort and loud noises. They really do work! If your little one is OK with keeping them in their ear that is.
AIRPLANE FRIENDLY TOYS
So many good ones here, we're going to just list them off to make it easy:
- Gel Window Clings – hopefully, you can score a window seat.
- Headphones + iPad – make sure they are volume-limiting kids’ headphones.
- Tape Activity Books
- Crayons and Coloring Book
- Wrapped toys. Head to the Target $1 aisle and find some random toys to wrap and put in a bag. They will love the surprise!
- Water Wow Coloring Book
PACK A LITTLE EXTRA
You NEVER know about airline delays, food spills, etc.… Always aim to pack a few extra diapers and a change of clothes. This extra packing also includes snacks, snacks, and more snacks. This is a time to bring their comfort foods or “safe” foods you know they will fill up on. As for liquids and milk, you are not able to bring water however you can bring milk and formula. TSA will do some extra checks on this, but it will be allowed through.

CROSS BODY BAG
This one is for you parents! A cross-body bag is so you can easily access your phone, ID, and boarding pass. It’s easy when this is not in your other bag but attached to your body separately, making things so much smoother. Everyone I know has one of these!
BRING A SAFE TEDDY
Comfort is key here. Bringing something from home and bedtime will help them feel safe and secure. Bring their favorite stuffed animal or blanket.
